Dengue Epidemic in Panama Exceeds Number of Previous Years

Panama, Dec 23.- The reported cases of Dengue in Panama during this 2014 – with a total of 5,164 patients – overcome the numbers of previous years, said today the Department of Epidemiology of the Department of Health (Minsa).
In its summary report of the year on an evil that seems to be already endemic in the country, it clarified that of this total 20 are hospitalized in this moment with serious Dengue and 9 have died during this period, and in general the number of affected overcomes the one of the previous year in 383 cases.

The information offered by the Minsa indicates that in 2013, 4,781 cases of Dengue happened, and 8 of them died, one less than this year.

The number of affected in 2014 also overcomes the patients quantity of every year since 1993, date when it was registered the arrival of the Dengue to Panama.

According to numbers of Epidemiology, the highest indexes of infestation of mosquitoes have been registered in the district of San Miguelito, with 4,1%, while the national infestation index is low, scarcely 0,9%, which means a big concentration in specific areas.

The authorities of Health made a call to the population so that they help to erradicate the hatcheries of the Aedes aegypti, which presence keeps been founded in plastic packings, canisters, pasteboards of drinks and inside the housings and commercial places.(Prensa Latina).
