Correa Requests Regional Support to Normalization of Cuba-US Links

Quito, Dec 23.- President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa estimated here that the regional integration bodies in Latin America and the Caribbean must support the normalization process lof relations between Cuba and United States.
During a conversation with the press from Galapagos Island, the president said last night that entities like the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the Union of South American Nations should give total support to that rapprochement between Washington and Havana, that should be a cause of joy for America’.

It is good to have political will of the two countries to normalize relations, “assured the head of state, and stressed that this process should conclude with the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade the US government has against Cuba

Correa reiterated his condemnation to that criminal seige that has lasted 53 years and has cost lives, wealth and prosperity to Cuba’.

He added that it constitutes a violation of international law, the United Nations charter and the charter of the Organization of American States.

He also emphasized that despite the economic problems caused by that hostile policy, Cuba has managed to resist and achieve high levels of human development for its population.

‘What country in Latin America could resist blockade for three months?’, he demanded and added that the Caribbean island ‘has done it for 50 years, and when it is lifted (blockade), no one will stop Cuba. (Prensa Latina).
